In a recent live interview with Ticker TV, Frans Verheij, Partner and Sustainability Lead at Argon & Co, offered critical insights into how Australian businesses are responding to the uncertainty. His key message? Amid changing political climates, businesses must stay focused on long-term sustainability.

“Sustainability is not optional,” Frans emphasized. “Your consumers demand it. The regulator demands it. Even if priorities shift internationally, local expectations in Australia and New Zealand remain the same.”

While sectors like steel and iron ore may face negative impacts due to increased U.S. tariffs, others like beef exports could benefit. But rather than getting lost in the week-to-week headlines, Frans urged businesses to stay the course and take a long-term view.

“Supply chain strategy is not about tomorrow or yesterday- it’s a one, three, or even ten-year journey,” he said. “Don’t boil the ocean. Focus on three or four sustainability initiatives that make a real impact, whether it’s carbon, circular economy, or ESG culture.”

Frans also likened sustainability’s trajectory to that of workplace safety: once a compliance obligation, now embedded in organisational culture. He predicts the same future for sustainability, an integrated, non-negotiable part of doing business.
