I. Beautiful and moving obituary in the New York Times for Susan M. Baer, one of the pioneers of women in the transportation industry. She once said of her work for the Panama Canal, “They wanted women who could type. I convinced them that after traveling on my own through South and Central America, I could take whatever they gave me.” Baer was only 65 years old at the time of her passing.

II. Looking to help local industries and businesses, Fort Valley State University in Georgia has added a new major. That’s right, you can now get a major in logistics! The University has approved this business administration bachelor’s degree with a major in supply chain and logistics management.

III. Have you been reading up on the fascinating world of hyperloop technology? All things Elon Musk tend to make the news, but after the splashy headlines, there are some genuine thrills to consider – especially where it concerns shipping. Russia has invested in the technology in the hopes of launching vacuum trains in the Far East and in Moscow.

Discussing the investment made by Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) general director Kirill Dmitriev said, “Our investment in Hyperloop One will provide access to leading technologies for the Russian market. Together with its international partners, RDIF will support the project not only on Russian territory but also in the Middle East and Far East markets.”

IV. Looking to up the stakes in their battle with Amazon, Walmart has just acquired online retailer Jet.com. The $3 billion deal closed last week. Reuters shares this purchase seems to be the end of a buying spree. “[Walmart] has already bought 15 startups, seeking the talent and technology to make it a dominant player online and narrow the massive gap with market leader Amazon.”
