If you read our last post, you\u2019ll already be in the loop about the current wave of <\/span><\/span>intrigue and challenge surrounding c<\/span>ompany culture. <\/span><\/span>And you\u2019ll be up to speed on the first of the five myths we\u2019ve bust<\/span>ed<\/span> at Argon & Co on this subject: <\/span><\/span>\u2018Of course we are aware of our own culture!\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/em>. Having taken that reality check on internal <\/span>knowledge, it\u2019s time to look at how we go about directing people towards the behaviours we\u2019d like them to adopt<\/span>:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Company Culture Myth #2:\u00a0 Once everyone knows our values, the culture we\u2019re aiming for will follow.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

There\u2019s no dispute that a desired company culture needs to be underpinned by clearly defined values. Judging by the number of times we\u2019ve seen these displayed on <\/span>organisations\u2019 walls, it seems everyone is getting that particular memo. But then what? In our experience, whoever is responsible for implementing company culture seems to drop the ball at that point. Job done. They couldn\u2019t be more wrong!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Circulating the list of values barely scratches the surface of what really needs to happen if you actually want them to stick. As you well know, people are not machines. Desired behaviours, especially if they are different to those currently being exhibited, need to be cultivated and nurtured. Like training a delicate climbing plant to grow the way you want.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Company culture is a living organism. You can\u2019t just plant the seed \u2013 by distributing a set of values and\/or conducting a one-off induction programme \u2013 and expect it to grow in a uniform manner, exactly as planned. Culture needs daily attention, evaluation, feedback and correction to ensure behaviours remain aligned with the company\u2019s mission and vision.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In conclusion:<\/span> Culture is a never-ending project which needs continual nurturing, guidance and stimulation.<\/strong><\/p>\n
