The Omicron variant of COVID-19 is knocking on the door of New Zealand. If we look around the world it is just a (short) matter of time before this\u00a0more transmissible variant is running through our communities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is not a scare story, in fact, as we can see globally and more locally in Australia, most countries are just getting on with it and dealing with the impacts \u2013 the reality is that they have\u00a0needed to, this variant is a lot harder to contain and control.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In Australia\u00a0we have seen food production halted because of severe staffing and product shortages,\u00a0retail stores with 10-20 per cent staff absence, distribution\u00a0centres\u00a0with 20-35 per cent & trucking companies with 10-50 per cent absence because they either had COVID-19 or were in isolation.\u00a0These are material impacts.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The NZ supply chain can take heed from Australia. Here are a few practical steps to consider or test within your crisis planning:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Stress\u00a0test\u00a0your supply chain through scenario planning \u2013 assess impacts using \u2018what if\u2019 analysis \u2013 then plan your mitigation strategies<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
      \n
    1. Build or retain optionality in your\u00a0labour\u00a0force \u2013 cross skill your\u00a0own workers & enhance your temporary or contract\u00a0labour\u00a0pool<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
        \n
      1. Review your inventory levels, build stock and move it to reduce risk and create options \u2013 try and\u00a0minimise\u00a0your single points of failure<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
          \n
        1. Increase resilience by creating new capacity or adding flexibility\u00a0into your network \u2013 turn on multiple fulfilment locations\u00a0or sourcing options, enable the use of multiple transport companies or own staff deliveries & identify \/ contract overflow capacity<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          The reality is that the NZ supply chain is about to be tested by COVID once again. There will be impacts, costs will increase, service will deteriorate, and shortages will happen. Knowing that you have prepared well, building resilience and agility is fundamental.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
